Patio Heaters

As the temperatures drop, turn your outdoor space into that warm and inviting gathering place with a patio heater. Heating your patio can be a challenge, but here you will find all the information needed, to make an informed decision on how to purchase a patio heater.

To start with a little background information on the basics of patio heaters. Patio heaters are known as radiant heaters or infrared heaters.  These kinds of heater, warm objects rather than heat the air.  They warm like the sun rays but without the harmful UV rays of the sun.  The infrared heater, heats everything in the path of the rays, so you are warmed instantly. No reason to wait for the ambient temperature to rise.

Then patio heaters are rated in two ways - BTU's for Gas or Watts for electric.  The higher the BTU's the more heat that will be produced, and the larger the area will heat.  Same thing with watts - the higher the watts the more heat that is produced which will expand it to larger areas.
BTU's needed:  Follow this simple math formula.

  • Calculate the volume of the space to be heated by multiplying square footage by height.
  • Multiply that number by 4 if you are using it outdoors
·        1 watt = approximately 3.41 BTU/hour
·        1000 BTUs/hour = approximately 293 watts

Watts needed: Follow this simple math formula

Patio heaters are available in three fuel variations: natural gas, propane or electric.  They also come with different types of ignition systems.  To begin with, lets talk about the fuel system types:

FUEL TYPES:

http://www.woodlanddirect.com/images/infopages/PH-NatGas-Small.jpgNatural Gas heaters are connected to your home gas lines.  This would require installation by a professional (Don't try this on your own.) This fuel never runs out, so you never have propane tanks to fill.  This fuel type is the least expensive to run.  These types of heater produce a large amount of heat instantly upon ignition.

http://www.woodlanddirect.com/images/infopages/PH-Propane-Small.jpg Propane gas heaters use refillable tanks.  They are ideal if you want something mobile, either for storage or versatility.  They do not have to be near an electrical outlet, or have professional installation.  These types of heaters also produce a large amount of heat instantly upon ignition.

Electricity.jpgElectric can provide warmth, without an open flame.  With electric designs, there is no need to buy fuel, but the bulbs do need to be replaced occasionally.  Electric patio heaters do not emit harmful emissions into the atmosphere, therefore they are non-toxic and safe for the environment.  They are inexpensive and are extremely energy efficient. All you need is an electrical outlet, to plug into.   Electric heaters can be used in partially enclosed areas.  Instant heat as soon as you plug them in.

IGNITION TYPE

  • A direct spark ignition (DSI) uses an electric spark to light a pilot light. Once the pilot is lit, a control knob can be turned on to light the main burner.

  • More advanced options use a Piezo lighter, which is commonly found on gas appliances. A quartz crystal is used to produce a spark that lights the pilot light on the heater. This type of ignition is quicker and more dependable than a DSI ignition.

  • Electronic ignition is the most advanced type of system. There is no pilot light, and the unit is wired into a home so all you have to do is turn a switch on or off to operate it. This type of ignition works with permanent heaters, not portable ones.

Once you have decided on the fuel type and ignition type then you can go on a look at the safety features of patio heaters.

SAFETY FEATURES:

A lot of patio heaters are available with a wide range of  safety features.  The most basic of which are:

  • Automatic shut-off switches, to prevent leaking gas,
  • Safety tilt shut-off switches, to prevent heaters from lighting objects on fire should they fall.
  • Other features include heat adjustment,
  • Tip-resistant construction
